My smartphone setup: Alternatives to proprietary applications
This was initially a markdown file that I had in order to remind me of the apps I use on my smartphone device (in case I ever need to re-install the OS). I have decided to publish it. There are hundreds of similar posts throughout the internet. This is, however, a list of the apps I personally use and recommend. All of these apps are free and open-source.
- OS: LineageOS without google play services;
- App repository: F-droid for FOSS apps and YALP when I need something from the google-play store, which happens very rarely;
- Reddit: Slide;
- ycombinator/hacker-news: Materialistic;
- Meditation app: Meditation Assistant;
- Sync app (Dropbox alternative): Syncthing. I sync some files to my desktop/laptop using my Raspberry PI acting as some sort of centralized server;
- Browser: Privacy Browser;
- Messaging: Signal, Riot for the matrix protocol and conversations as an xmpp client;
- Weather: Forecastie;
- Youtube: NewPipe and/or SkyTube;
- To-Do: SimpleTask, which follows the todo.txt idea;
- Filter for blue light: RedMoon;
- Maps (google maps alternative): OsmAnd~, an Open street maps app;
- Block traffic on a per-app basis: NetGuard;
- PDF viewer: MuPDF;
- Launcher: KISS;
- Chess: I play on Lichess using their mobile app;
- Calendar: Etar;
- CalDav/Cardav: DavDroid;
- Podcasts: AntennaPod;
- TOTP/2FA/Google-Authenticator alternative: AndOTP;
I will keep this list updated for my own use. All of these apps are available in the F-Droid store, with the exception of Signal and Lichess.
